The Details

Location

We start and finish at Edale, which is on a train line between Sheffield and Manchester. Edale is the start of the famous Pennine Way, and you will certainly learn how tough that walk is.

Date

We are hiking on Saturday 5 August, so we will be meeting at Edale on the evening of Friday 4 August, and stay there overnight.

The Route

We are still fine-tuning the route, but this link will show you our current plan. We walk up from Edale to the Kinder Scout plateau and then circumnavigate it and return to Edale. The navigation tool we used to create this link says it is 24KM (about 15 miles), but the route on the map has lots of straight lines, and on the ground they are much more twisty – so it will be a bit longer. You can see our draft route here.

There are no roads to deal with once we leave Edale until we return. The route is made mostly of rocks and mud, along with some gravel and streams. The ground is steep and slippery, this is not an easy walk, it is a serious hike.

Equipment

If the weather is good, you will need hiking boots, comfortable hiking clothing, and bag containing water and food to last you all day (if it is a hot, dry summer you will need to carry plenty of water). You will also need to carry a waterproof – the weather can change quickly on moors.

If the weather is bad, you will need good waterproof clothing, waterproof hiking books (gaiters would not go amiss) and a strong soul.

Trespass?

We have named our trek a Trespass in honour of the 85th anniversary of the Mass Trespass of Kinder Scout in 1932, when the ordinary folk of England challenged the right of the landowners to keep the people off ‘their’ moors. Without their actions, the moors might still be closed today. However, we will actually be walking on public footpaths and not breaking any laws.
